The Delta Community Foundation was founded by the Ladner Rotary Club and incorporated in 1986 under the Society Act of British Columbia. This Foundation was established as a means of providing a taxable receipt when qualifying charitable donations were made.
The first board of directors in 1986 included Duncan Goheen as chair, Ernie Burnett as Vice Chair, Chester Walden as Treasurer, Peter Podovinikoff as Secretary, Stan Thomas and Colin Thompson as directors.
In 1987, the Foundation was registered as a charity with CRA and assigned a charity number.
Since the inception of the Delta Community Foundation in 1986, all the officers and directors have been volunteers. The administration costs incurred by the Foundation have been minimal, covering the cost of directors insurance, and postal & stationary costs.
Delta Community Foundation continues to provide approximately $35,000 in support annually to charitable organizations providing service and support to the residents of Delta, as well as in the form of scholarships and bursaries to graduating Delta students.
The Delta Community Foundation has grown to become a strong, independent organization that serves Delta by financially assisting the many charitable and non-profit organizations here in our community. Our assets are now in excess of $1.3 million and increasing every year. Even with past downturns in the economy, the Delta Community Foundation has continued to be able to award grants, scholarships and bursaries every year while other community foundations have temporarily suspended their giving. Denis Denischuk can speak more on the solid investment policy that has allowed the continual growth of the Delta Community Foundation.
